Microphone technique

There is no point in having the greatest voice and the ability to deliver an amazing performance if you can’t be heard properly. Nor is it worth spending big bucks on that perfect microphone if you don’t know how to use it.

The way you use the microphone can at times make or break your performance but in order to learn to use the microphone you will need to understand it.

Microphones come with different pickup patterns, otherwise known as polar patterns. Basically these patterns tell you the way in which your microphones will pickup your voice.

The most common microphone pickup pattern you will come across is the Cardioid which comes from the word cardi, meaning heart. This pattern gives you a semicircle space (similar to a love heart pattern) in front of the microphone and is used in most large diaphragm condenser microphones.

Other patterns you will encounter are omni, figure 8, directional and then there is super & hyper cardioid.

It is important to have an understanding of these polar patterns and most importantly the pattern of your microphone.

what clients have said;

Justin is very easy to work with. We send through scripts and Justin understands the tone without direction. Our promos often need a powerful yet friendly voice and Justin’s suits this perfectly. His voice recordings are strong and crisp.

I would highly recommend working with him. Trevor Downie - C31 Melbourne
